AND ALL THAT
The Story of American English
Linguistic Differences between the Southern and Northern Settlements
The southern colonists came mainly from England's “West Country” – such counties as Somerset and Gloucestershire
They brought with them its characteristic accent, a chief feature being the r pronounced after vowels
Most of the northern colonists came from counties in the east of England, such as Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and London
These eastern accents tended not to sound an r after vowels, and this proved to be the dominant influence in the area
Harvard, for example, would be pronounced “Haava'd”
