AND ALL THAT
A History of English Dictionaries
Samuel Johnson's Project
Johnson began his work on the dictionary in 1746
It took Johnson three years to read his source works and mark the citations to be used
These were copied onto slips of paper and filed alphabetically
He then began to draft definitions
The first sheets were printed in 1750, beginning at letter A
It was complete by 1754, and an edition of 2,000 copies appeared in 1755
Johnson himself was responsible for seeing four editions through the press, the last in 1773
42,773 entries in the first edition, 43,279 in the fourth with 140,871 definitions and 222,114 quotations
