Samuel Johnson's Project

  • Johnson began his work on the dictionary in 1746

 
  • It took Johnson three years to read his source works and mark the citations to be used

 
  • These were copied onto slips of paper and filed alphabetically

 
  • He then began to draft definitions

 
  • The first sheets were printed in 1750, beginning at letter A

 
  • It was complete by 1754, and an edition of 2,000 copies appeared in 1755

 
  • Johnson himself was responsible for seeing four editions through the press, the last in 1773

 
  • 42,773 entries in the first edition, 43,279 in the fourth with 140,871 definitions and 222,114 quotations
